Optimize PDF
How to Optimize PDF for Web
PDFs linked from a webpage load on phones over mobile connections. Optimization is compression plus a few structural choices that cut load time without making the document look cheap.
Step by Step
- Start with the file size: above a few megabytes, compress before anything else.
- Choose a compression level and verify text remains crisp at 100% zoom.
- Downsample oversized images — a web document rarely needs more than 150 ppi.
- Remove pages that serve print only: blank backs, order forms, long appendices.
- Set a descriptive document title and author metadata; browser tabs and search results display them.
- Keep the first page light; it renders before anything else while the rest streams in.
- Re-check the total size and confirm it fits your budget for mobile visitors.
- Link the optimized file from the page, not the print master.
Tips
- A print-quality master and a web copy are two different jobs — keep both and link the smaller one.
- Compress once, at the end, after the pages are final; compressing an already compressed file costs quality for little gain.
